GOLDEN SUNS TENNIS HAVE SEVERAL OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES AT MILLSAPS FALL CLASSIC

        JACKSON, Mississippi The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns Tennis team competed last weekend at the Millsaps Fall Classic and had several players perform well at the tournament.

Juniors Whitney Simmons (Pottsville, Ark.) and Karissa Lentz (Norco, Calif.) each went 2-1 in second flight singles action, while sophomore Tahnee Crous (Keller, Texas) teamed with Lentz to go 1-1 in first flight doubles.

Simmons, who was a Second-Team All-GSC West Division selection last year, opened with a straight set win (6-1, 6-0) over Southern Arkansas’ Tami Chadick in second flight singles, before losing to Jackson State’s Teega Cross (6-3, 6-2), Simmons ended singles play with a third-set tiebreaker win over Belhaven’s Neely Johnson (6-2, 7-6 [3]). Meanwhile, Lentz began second flight singles with a three set win over Belhaven’s Elise Entzenberger (4-6, 6-4, 10-4) and then fell to Centenary’s Courtney Myers (7-6 [5], 6-0). Lentz completed singles play with a straight set win over SAU’s Anika Bhalla (6-2, 6-1).

In first flight singles, Crous went 0-3 as she began play with a three-set loss to Jackson State’s Fungisai Chambwe (5-7, 6-4, 4-10), before falling in straight sets to both Belhaven’s Kirby Smith (6-0, 6-0) and Centenary’s Christine Majchrowicz (6-4, 6-0). The final Tech competitor in first flight singles was junior Puja Paul (Kolkata, India), who went 0-3. Paul lost in straight sets to SAU’s Nelly Tualla (6-1, 6-2) and then fell in a third-set tiebreaker to Centenary’s Kristina Collins (6-2, 2-6, 10-8) before ending singles play with a straight set loss to Jackson State’s Pauline Vargas (6-2, 6-0).

Meanwhile, in doubles action, Crous and Lentz collected their win over SAU’s Chadick and Tualla (8-4) and lost to Centenary’s tandem of Collins and Majchrowicz (8-4). Simmons and Paul teamed together to go 1-2 in doubles as they earned an 8-2 win over Centenary’s Jennifer Majchrowicz and Lindsey Ezell and fell by identical 8-4 scores to Belhaven’s duo of Johnson and Smith and also to SAU’s Korensek and Phinny.

The Golden Suns will continue their fall season next weekend (Sept. 6-7) when they compete at the Colin County Community College Invitational in Plano, Texas.
