ARKADELPHIA,
Arkansas –
Arkansas
Tech Golden Suns Tennis returned to Gulf South
Conference action here Wednesday by dropping a
hard-fought 5-4 decision to Henderson State.
With the loss, Tech falls to 12-2 overall and 1-2 in the
GSC, while HSU improves to a 7-5-1 overall and 2-1 in
the GSC.
Wednesday’s match came down to the final singles match
as Tech sophomore Jessica James (Valley Springs,
Ark.) fell in a dramatic third set to HSU’s Estephanie
Lau. Lau won the first set, 6-0, but fell 6-3 to James
in the second set. Lau won the third set, 7-5.
James’ third-set match was the third of the day for the
Golden Suns as senior Anna Carson (Greenwood,
Ark.) won in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) at No. 1 singles
over HSU’s Meredith Massey and sophomore Michelle Yu
(Flower Mound, Texas) fell in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-0)
to HSU’s Stephanie Schnobel at No. 5 singles.
“It was a tough, hard-fought match, but we just weren’t
able to pull out those three-set singles matches at No.
5 and 6,” Golden Suns Head Coach Abby Davis said.
In doubles action, Tech won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles,
but its No. 1 team of Carson and sophomore Saki
Matsuoka (Saitama, Japan) fell 8-0 to HSU’s No. 1
team of Massey and Anna Lobnitz, 8-0.
Along with Carson’s win at No. 1 singles, the Golden
Suns also won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Freshman
Brittany Turner (Pearcy, Ark.) fell in straight sets
at No. 3 singles.
