GOLDEN SUNS RANKED 10TH IN LATEST D-II SOUTH REGION SOFTBALL RANKINGS

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Arkansas Tech Golden Suns Softball finally moved into this week’s NCAA Division II South Region Poll at No. 10 following its three victories last weekend at Arkansas-Monticello. The South Region poll is released weekly by the NCAA during the season and determines the eight teams that make the NCAA D-II South Regional Tournament at the end of the season.

Tech is ranked 10th in this week’s final regular season South Region poll as the Golden Suns are 40-20 overall on the season and are 29-18 against in-region teams. The 40 overall wins are a regular season school record. Last season, Tech won a school-record 41 games, but won 38 games in the regular season.

The region ranking is based on a point system that takes into account wins-losses overall, in-region wins-losses and strength of schedule, along with other things that are involved.

Tech is one of five Gulf South Conference teams ranked in this week’s NCAA D-II South Region rankings as Alabama-Huntsville (42-4 D-II record, 38-4 South Region) is ranked No. 1, while Valdosta State (44-6 D-II record, 44-6 South Region) is ranked second. West Florida (31-13 D-II record, 24-13 South Region) is ranked fifth and West Alabama (28-16 D-II record, 26-16 South Region) is ranked No. 8.

In addition to the five GSC schools, the other teams ranked in this week’s poll are from the Sunshine State Conference. Florida Southern (37-12 D-II record, 33-12 South Region) headlines the SSC teams at No. 3 and is followed by Rollins (45-8 D-II record, 33-7 South Region) at No. 4. Nova Southeastern (43-13 D-II record, 40-13 South Region) is ranked sixth, while Tampa (27-12 D-II record, 17-10 South Region) is at No. 7 and Barry (30-19 D-II record, 26-19 South Region) is at No. 9.

The Golden Suns will return to action on Friday, May 1, when they open up play at the 2009 GSC Tournament against East No. 4 seed West Alabama at 9:30 a.m. at the Greenbrook Softball Complex in Southaven, Miss.
