Golden Suns place three on GSC softball

Three Arkansas Tech Golden Suns have been named to the 2005 all-Gulf South
Conference softball team in a vote by the league's coaches.
They are freshman first baseman Nicole Berry of Glendora, Calif., freshman
shortstop Molly Schweigert of Salem, Ore., and freshman third baseman Erica Meza
of Palm Springs, Calif.
Berry, who also saw pitching duty for the Golden Suns, was a first-team
selection for the West Division. She played in and started all 48 games for
Tech, batting at a .356 clip with 52 hits and 32 runs batted in.
Berry, who scored 32 runs, had 12 doubles, one triple and 7 home runs and
finished the spring with a team-best .596 slugging percentage.
She also had a 7-2 pitching record, recording a 3.12 ERA over 75 innings of
work.
Schweigert, named to the West Division second team, played in and started 47
games for the Suns while batting .359. She scored a team-high 36 runs and led
the team in hits with 60 and doubles with 13.
Schweigert also had 5 triples, one home run and 23 RBIs, finishing the season
with a .515 slugging percentage.
Also a second team selection, Meza led the Golden Suns in hitting at .375 while
playing in 48 games and earning 46 starts.
She was the second leading hitter with 54 and had 5 doubles, 2 home runs and 17
RBIs. Meza wound up with a .451 slugging percentage.
All three players were instrumental in helping to lead the Golden Suns to a
school-record 27 wins.
West Division champion Delta State led the selection process with seven players,
five of which were placed on the first team. Southern Arkansas was next with
six.
