MONTICELLO, Ark. --- Arkansas Tech registered one of the
biggest wins of its brief softball history when it knocked off the five-time
defending Gulf South Conference West Division champion Arkansas-Monticello
Cotton Blossoms 4-3 in game two of a doubleheader at Blossoms Field on Saturday.
The Suns (10-8 overall, 2-6 GSC) scored the game-winning
run in the top of the eighth inning as they handed UAM (23-7, 4-1) its first
conference loss of the 2005 season.
Tech took a 3-0 lead in the second inning behind an RBI
single by Terrise Williams and a two-run double by Molly Schweigert. The
Blossoms tied the score in the bottom of the third on a three-run home run by
Jodie Scott, and the score remained knotted at 3-3 until Tech’s Dana Kuneman
scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning.
Noelle Cline (3-2), who pitched a complete game for the
Golden Suns, retired Arkansas-Monticello in order in the bottom of the eighth to
secure the victory for Tech. Cline allowed three runs, two of which were earned,
on five hits in eight innings pitched. She struck out five.
The Cotton Blossoms won game one of Saturday’s twin bill
6-1. Tech and UAM will play the rubber game of their three-game weekend series
at Blossoms Field on Sunday.
