Wonder Boys finish fourth at GSC Golf

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. --- A final-round team score of 297 on Tuesday gave
Arkansas Tech a 54-hole total of 881 and a fourth-place finish in the 2005 Gulf
South Conference Men's Golf Championship at Hot Springs Country Club's
6,690-yard, par-72 Arlington Course.
Tech, which was the defending champion at the event, shot 299-285 during the
first two rounds on Monday and was in third place entering Tuesday's final
round.
The Wonder Boys were led by Brent Wilson, Nick Quast and Bryon Thom, all of whom
earned a spot on the All-Gulf South Conference team by finishing in the top 14
of the individual standings.
Wilson, a senior from Cobble Hill, British Columbia, Canada, tied for second
overall with a 3-under par total of 213. He shot 74 and 69 on Monday before
finishing with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday.
Quast, a senior from Springdale, finished in sole possession of 12th place. He
had rounds of 74-69-76 for a 54-hole total of 3-over 219.
Thom, a sophomore from Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, claimed a share of
14th place with a three-round score of 221. He posted scores of 75-74-72.
Quast's all-conference award is the third of his career. He was also All-Gulf
South Conference in 2002 and 2004. Quast becomes just the 10th Wonder Boy golfer
in the 41-year history of the program to be named all-conference in three or
more years.
It was the second consecutive All-GSC award for both Wilson and Thom.
The team championship went to Delta State. The Statesmen posted 291 during the
final round and held off a late charge by the West Florida Argonauts. Delta
State completed the 54-hole event with an even-par team total of 864, six
strokes better than runner-up West Florida. The Argonauts shot 281 on Tuesday
for a final total of 870.
Central Arkansas (3rd, 288-295-294-877), Tech (4th, 299-285-297-881) and
Valdosta State (5th, 291-295-296-882) rounded out the top five in the final team
standings.
North Alabama (6th, 302-292-301-895), West Georgia (7th, 315-290-293-898),
Montevallo (T-8th, 310-300-303-913), Henderson State (T-8th, 312-305-296-913),
Lincoln Memorial (10th, 303-309-320-932) Ouachita Baptist (11th,
311-313-320-944), Harding (12th, 317-326-314-957), Southern Arkansas (13th,
333-314-318-965), Christian Brothers (14th, 331-325-319-975) and
Arkansas-Monticello (15th, 349-328-329-1,006) rounded out the field.
The individual championship was captured by James Porter of North Alabama. He
fired rounds of 71, 67 and 72 for a 6-under par total of 210 and a three-stroke
victory over Kevin Jones of Delta State and Tech's Wilson.
The Wonder Boys were also represented by Luke Calcatera (33rd, 76-75-79-230) and
Corey Durham (T-34th, 79-73-79-231).
