FOUR TECH STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO GSC ALL-ACADEMIC BASKETBALL TEAMS; 10 NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas Arkansas Tech University placed three Golden Suns (senior forward Daiane Domingos, sophomore guard Brittany Gottsponer and sophomore guard Ashley Grappe) and one Wonder Boy (sophomore guard Brandon Friedel) on the Gulf South Conference Winter Sports All-Academic Team that were released by the league office on Tuesday. In addition, 10 Tech basketball players, including seven Golden Suns, were named to the GSC’s Winter Sports Academic Honor Roll.

The GSC Winter Sports All-Academic team consists of 23 total student-athletes from men’s and women’s basketball among the conference’s 15 member institutions. Meanwhile, a total of 121 men’s and women’s basketball players with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 qualified for the All-Academic Honor Roll.

Academic All-GSC teams are selected by the GSC Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives in a joint vote. The nominees must have an overall grade point average of 3.20 or better for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete needed to be a significant contributor to the team. Other factors included leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. The SIDs and FARs were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

“I am really proud that three of women’s basketball players were named to the All-Academic team,” Golden Suns Head Basketball Coach Dave Wilbers said. “All three of these young ladies are outstanding, not only on the court, but also in the classroom. They are the true definition of a student-athlete.”
