Two Wonder Boys receive GSC player-of-week
honors
September 20,
2004
Arkansas Tech quarterback Jason Campbell and punter Glenn Wilson have
received Gulf South Conference player-of-the-week honors for their performances
in the Wonder Boys' 35-21 win over Southern Arkansas University last Saturday
evening at Buerkle Field.
Campbell, a 6-1, 205-pound junior from San Jose, Calif., collected his second
consecutive conference offensive player-of-the-week award as he completed 26 of
his 41 pass attempts ---- 63.4 percent ---- for 347 yards and three touchdowns.
Campbell, who has now thrown for three touchdowns in each of Tech's first three
games, is the first Wonder Boy quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in a
game since Josh Price passed for 300 yards against Carson-Newman back on
Nov. 20, 1999.
Wilson, a 6-1, 205-pound junior from Conroe, Texas, becomes the second Tech
player to garner special teams honors this season. He booted five punts for 186
yards, an average of 37.2 yards per punt, and placed two inside the 20-yard
line.
But Wilson's longest punt of the night came at just the right time when his
47-yard blast rolled out of bounds at the Southern Arkansas three-yard line with
2:52 left in the game and the Wonder Boys nursing a 28-21 lead.
Other conference honors for the week went to Central Arkansas quarterback Zak
Clark, who shared the offensive award with Campbell, and Delta State linebacker
Gary Bell.
Clark led the Bears to a 55-12 win over Henderson State, completing
24-of-36 passes for 306 yards and four scores. Bell took top defensive honors by
collecting a career-high 18 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and
a pass break-up in the Statesmen's 28-21 win over North Alabama.
