GOLDEN SUNS FINISH FIRST DAY OF ARKANSAS BLUE CROSS
BLUE SHIELD/GSC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SECOND PLACE
HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas
–
Arkansas
Tech’s Women’s Golf made history here Monday as it
completed play at the 2007 Arkansas Blue Cross Blue
Shield/Gulf South Conference Golf Championships at the
Hot Springs Country Club with a school-best second place
finish out of nine teams.
Tech, who shot a school-record 322 in Sunday’s first
round, finished the 36-hole, two-day event by firing a
323 in Monday’s final round, which was enough to hold
off third place Henderson State (652) and fourth place
West Georgia (660).
“I’m really proud of our girls for how well they played
the past two days,” Tech Head Women’s Golf Coach Amy
White said. “We competed and played our best golf at
the end of the season. We wanted to make some history
and today we accomplished that feat.”
Tech’s second place finish was its highest ever in a GSC
Meet as they have had three third place finishes and a
fourth place finish in its previous four GSC Tournaments
prior to this season.
West Florida, the fifth ranked team in the latest NGCA
Division II National rankings, took home the GSC team
title for the second consecutive season as the Lady
Argonauts shot a two-day total of 601 to win the
championship.
Leading the way for Tech was senior Carissa Sullivan
(Van Buren, Ark.), who fired a 36-hole total of 160 to
finish in 10th place. Sullivan followed her season-best
78 in Sunday’s first round with an 82 in Monday’s final
round.
West Florida’s
Sarah Nicholson took home the league’s individual
medalist honors as she fired a 36-hole total of 146.
After shooting a two-under par 70 in Sunday’s first
round, Nicholson shot a 76 in the final round. UWF’s
Victoria Jackson shot a 150 (72, 78) to finish in second
place, while UWF’s Clara Fornella fired at 151 (78, 73)
to finish in third place.
In
addition to Sullivan, senior Jamie Moore (Conway,
Ark.) fired a 161 for 36 holes to finish in a tie for
11th place with fellow teammate, sophomore Danielle
Lewis (Toronto, Canada). Moore, who shot an 81 in
the first round, carded an 80 in Monday’s final round,
while Lewis rebounded after shooting an 83 in the first
round to fire a team-best 78 in Monday’s final round of
action. Junior Cassie Bartley (Shirley, Ark.) had rounds
of 81 and 83 respectively to shoot 164 and finish in
13th place, while sophomore Casey Wheeler (Little Rock,
Ark.) fired 169 for 36 holes to finish in 18th place.
Wheeler, who shot an 82 in the first round, carded a
round of 87 on Monday.
