TAYLOR WALLNER NAMED AN ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC
ALL-DISTRICT VI AT-LARGE SELECTION
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech’s Taylor Wallner has been named an
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI
College Division At-Large selection by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Wallner,
a senior men’s golfer from Fayetteville, Ark., earns his
first-ever ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District VI honor and is the first Wonder Boy golfer
to earn the honor since Lucas Wald in 2001. He is
just one of two Gulf South Conference student-athletes
named to the Academic All-District VI At-Large Team as
Southern Arkansas men’s golfer Jack Crowley was also
honored.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-America
honors, a student-athlete must have at least 3.30
cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be
a starter or an important reserve and be in at least
their second season of athletic and academic eligibility
at their current school. In addition, all first-team
All-District selections advance on to the Academic
All-American ballot.
Wallner,
who carries a 3.47 cumulative grade point average in
history and political science, played in 12 tournaments
and had a scoring average of 75.6 in 28 rounds of golf
this past season. He helped lead Tech to a runner-up
finish at the 2009 GSC Championships in Hot Springs,
Ark., and also helped the Wonder Boys earn its sixth
NCAA D-II Regional Tournament appearance and its first
since 2004. On the season, Wallner, who was named Tech’s
Outstanding Senior Male Student-Athlete of the Year, had
five rounds of par or better and had three Top 10
finishes and four Top 25 performances on the year. Shot
a season-best 142 enroute to finishing fourth at the
Ouachita Baptist Invitational and had a season-low round
of 69 on three different occasions. He finishes his Tech
career with a 76.5 scoring average in 20 tournaments and
44 rounds of golf. In his Wonder Boy career, Wallner has
been a three-time member of the GSC Men’s Golf Academic
Honor Roll.
With his selection this season, Wallner becomes Tech’s
third-ever CoSIDA Academic All-District VI at-large
selection.
CoSIDA members in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas were
responsible for the voting.
