WONDER BOYS OPEN SPRING SEASON WITH 15TH PLACE FINISH
AT PRESTIGIOUS 27TH-ANNUAL MATLOCK COLLEGIATE CLASSIC

LAKELAND, Florida Arkansas Tech Men’s Golf opened up the spring portion of its schedule with a 15th place finish at the prestigious 27th-Annual Matlock Collegiate Classic held here at Lone Palm Golf Club.

The tournament featured four of the top six ranked teams in the country in NCAA Division II men’s golf, and nine of the Top 25. In addition, four others schools, including Tech, were among other teams receiving votes.

Tech finished the 15-team, 54-hole tournament with a score of 944. The Wonder Boys opened the tournament with a 320, then shot a 319 in the second round and concluded play with a 305 in Tuesday’s final round. Florida Southern, the tournament’s host school, took home the team title for the third time in the last four years as the fifth-ranked Moccasins shot a two-day total of 870, while top-ranked West Florida shot an 874 to finish in second place and Georgia College & State University, the tournament’s first-round leader, shot an 880 to finish in third place.

“This was an extremely tough tournament for our golfers,” Tech Head Coach Dave Falconer said. “The weather wasn’t the best and the field of teams was very strong. I liked the way we rebounded and finished the tournament after struggling in the first two rounds.”

Leading the way for the Wonder Boys was junior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.), who fired a 54-hole total of 222 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Carlyle opened the tournament with a 77, then carded a two-under par 70 in the second round and finished play with a 75 in the final round.

West Florida’s Matthew Galloway took home individual medalist honors for the second consecutive season as he fired a six-under par 210. Galloway became just the third player in the tournament’s 27-year history to win medalist honors in back-to-back seasons. Nova Southeastern’s Constantin Schwierz finished second after carding a three-under par 213, while Valdosta State’s Brent Witcher and Florida Southern’s Matt Stauch each shot a one-under 215 to finish tied for third place.

In addition to Carlyle, sophomore Ryan Hitt (Allen, Texas) shot a 242 (75, 85, 82) for the tournament to finish in a tie for 68th place, while sophomore Jonathon Spikes (Danville, Ark.) and junior Taylor Wallner (Fayetteville, Ark.) each carded 245s to finish in a tie for 72nd place. Spikes had rounds of 85, 84 and 76, while Wallner had rounds of 86, 80 and 79. The fifth finisher for Tech was junior B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas), who shot a 246 (83, 88, 75) to finish in 74th place.

Tech will continue its spring season on Feb. 24-25 at the Henderson State Invitational at Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark.
