WONDER BOYS FINISH SECOND AT CRAWFORD/WADE INVITATI0NAL

        POTTSBORO, Texas – Arkansas Tech Men’s Golf opened the spring portion of its 2008-09 schedule with a second-place finish at the Crawford/Wade Invitational held here at the Tanglewood Resort.

Tech finished the 54-hole, two-day tournament by carding a 911 to finish in second place and was four shots in front of third-place St. Mary’s [TX] (915) and nine shots in front of fourth place, Texas A&M-Commerce (920).  Tech opened Monday’s first round with a 310, then shot a 297 in the second round and carded a 304 in Tuesday’s final round.

Central Oklahoma took home the team title as the Bronchos shot a two-day, 54-hole total of 878. UCO shot rounds of 288, 288 and 302 in the final round.

Leading the way for Tech was junior Jonathon Spikes (Danville, Ark.). Spikes shot a 54-hole total of 221 to finish in a tie for fourth place with Wonder Boy senior Taylor Wallner (Fayetteville, Ark.). Wallner was playing as an individual and didn’t figure into Tech’s team score. Spikes had rounds of 77, 74 and 70, while Wallner carded rounds of 69, 75 and 77.

UCO’s Colby Shurm took home individual medalist honors as he carded a six-under par 210. UCO’s Austin Bowman shot a two-over par 218 to finish in second place and St. Mary’s Matt Vela finished in third place after shooting a four-over par 220.

In addition to Spikes and Wallner, senior B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas) shot a six-over par 222 to finish in sixth place. Hawkins shot a 76 in the first round and then carded back-to-back 73’s. Senior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.) shot a two-day total of 229 (76, 74, 79) to finish in a tie for 13th place, while junior Ryan Hitt (Allen, Texas) shot a 239 (81, 76, 82) to finish in a tie for 39th place and junior Drew Richards (Prescott, Ark.) carded a 248 (84, 76, 86) to finish in a tie for 60th place.   

The Wonder Boys will continue its spring schedule on March 16-17 at the Ouachita Baptist Invitational, which will be held at the Glenwood Country Club in Glenwood, Ark.
