WONDER BOYS FINISH TIED FOR SIXTH AT NORTH ALABAMA'S
SPRING GOLF CLASSIC
MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama –
Arkansas Tech Men’s Golf finished tied for sixth place
out of 24 teams at the 2009 North Alabama Spring Classic
held at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting
Joe Course.
Tech finished the tournament with a score of 612 to
finish tied for sixth place with Rollins College. The
Wonder Boys finished one shot behind fifth-place
Indianapolis (611) and three shots in front of
eight-place St. Edward’s (615). Tech shot 306 in both
the first and second round.
North Alabama, the tournament’s host team, took home the
team title as the Lions shot a 597 (289-308). Washburn
carded a 599 (292-307) to finish in second place and
Lander University shot a 608 (304-304) to finish in
third place.
Leading the way for Tech was junior Andrew Richards
(Prescott, Ark.), who carded a 153 for 36 holes to
finish tied for 20th place. Richards shot a 74 in the
first round and then fired a 79 in Tuesday’s final
round.
Washburn’s Matt Ewald, North Alabama’s Wes Smith and
Brett Munson all shared individual medalist honors as
they carded 145s for the tournament. There was no
playoff to determine the individual medalist due to the
rainy weather.
In addition to Richards, seniors Taylor Wallner
(Fayetteville, Ark.) and Jarred Carlyle
(Nashville, Ark.) each carded a 154s to finish tied for
26th place. Wallner had rounds of 80 and 74, while
Carlyle shot rounds of 78 and 76. Junior Jonathon
Spikes (Danville, Ark.) fired a 155 (78-77) to
finish tied for 34th place and senior B.J. Hawkins
(Winnsboro, Texas) fired a 157 (76, 81) to finish tied
for 42nd place.
The Wonder Boys will return to action on April 14-15
when they travel to Heber Springs, Ark., to compete in
the Natural State Classic at the Red Apple Inn and
Country Club.
