WONDER BOYS CARD 293 TO MOVE TO 13TH PLACE FOLLOWING
SECOND ROUND OF NCAA D-II SOUTH/SOUTHEAST SUPER REGIONAL

The Arkansas Tech Men’s Golf team continued play here
Tuesday in the 2009 NCAA Division II South/Southeast
Super Regional at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals
Fighting Joe Course looking to rebound after firing a
306 in Monday’s first round.
In Tuesday’s second round, Tech fired a 293,
which was the fourth best score of the day, to jump from
19th place to 13th place heading into Wednesday’s final
round. Tech sits just 13 shots behind fifth-place
Columbus State (586) and nine shots behind sixth-place
Barton (590) and Georgia College & State University
(590).
One day after three teams shot par or better in the
first round, only two teams, Lynn and Barry [FL]
finished with a score of par of better as Lynn fired a
one-under par 287 and Barry carded an even-par 288 on
the day. With its 287 on Tuesday, Lynn moved into first
place with a score of 572 after 36 holes, while Barry
moved into a tie for second place with first-day leader
North Alabama. The Lions, who are the host team for the
regional, shot a seven-over par 295 in the second round
and are shooting 576 for the tournament. Nova
Southeastern is in fourth place (584) heading into
Wednesday’s final round after carding back-to-back 292s.
Tech, who is making its sixth-ever NCAA D-II Regional
appearance and first since 2004, opened the day by
firing a two-under par 142 on the back nine and the shot
a 151 on the front nine to jump back into contention at
the 54-hole tournament.
The top five teams (regardless of region) and the top
two individuals not from one of the five advancing teams
will qualify for the 2009 NCAA D-II National
Championships, which are being held at the
Semiahmoo Resort in Bellingham, Wash., on May 19-22.
Leading the way for Tech in Tuesday’s second round was
senior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.). Carlyle,
who carded a three-over par 75 in the first round, fired
a one-under par 71 on Tuesday. With his one-under 71,
Carlyle is now shooting a 146 for the tournament as he
moved up from a tie for 58th place on Monday to a tie
for 19th place heading into Wednesday’s final round.
In addition to UNA and Tech, other GSC competing in this
year’s South/Southeast Super Regional are West Florida
and Valdosta State. West
Florida, the defending NCAA D-II National Champions,
shot a 302 in the second round to finish in a tie for
eighth place after two days with a 591, while VSU carded
a 300 to finish in 10th place after two days with a 592
heading into the final round.
Along with Carlyle, other Tech scores on Tuesday were
senior Taylor Wallner (Fayetteville, Ark.) firing
a one-over par 73 to move into a tie for 53rd place with
a 150 (77, 73) for 36 holes, while junior Jonathon
Spikes (Danville, Ark.) carded a 76 to finish in a
tie for 62nd place with a 152 (76, 76) for 36 holes.
Senior B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas) rebounded
after firing an 81 in the first round with a 73 in the
second round to move into a tie for 79th place with a
154 (81, 73) for 36 holes and junior Drew Richards
(Prescott, Ark.) shot an 82 in the second place to fall
into a tie for 98th place with a 160 (78, 82) after 36
holes.
The tournament will conclude on Wednesday with
another 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m.
