WONDER BOYS RANKED EIGHTH IN INITIAL NCAA D-II
SOUTH REGION GOLF POLL
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana –
The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee has released
its first Division II men’s golf regional rankings for
the 2009 season. The rankings list the Top 10 teams in
the each of the eight NCAA D-II regions.
Arkansas Tech is ranked eighth in the initial South
Region rankings and is one of four teams from the Gulf
South Conference in the first South Region poll of the
season.
At the end of the season, the top 10 teams from each
region, including automatic qualifier and the top four
individuals not on one of the 10 teams that qualify for
a region berth will compete in one of four 54-hole Super
Regional Tournaments as part of the NCAA D-II Men’s Golf
Championships. After Super Regional play, the top five
teams and top two individuals not with a team from each
regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2009
NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Championship at the Loomis Trail
Golf Club in Blaine, Wash., which will be held from May
19-22.
In addition to Tech, the other GSC teams ranked in the
first South Region poll are Valdosta State at No. 4,
West Florida is ranked sixth and North Alabama is ranked
seventh.
Nova Southeastern from the Sunshine State Conference
headlines the first South Region poll and is followed by
fellow conference members Florida Southern at No. 2,
Lynn University at No. 3, Barry at No. 5 and Rollins at
No. 10. The other team ranked in the first South Region
poll is Flagler at No. 9. Flagler is an NCAA D-II
independent school located in St. Augustine, Fla.
The Wonder Boys have qualified for NCAA Regional play
five times as a team in school history, but its most
recent appearance as a team came in 2004 when Tech
finished seventh in the South Regional in Valdosta, Ga.
Last season, senior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.)
earned a berth in the South/South Central Super Regional
as an individual and finished 13th overall after
shooting a 213 for 54 holes.
In the latest Golfstat NCAA Division II rankings, Tech
is ranked 22nd with a record of 170-23 and is one of
four GSC teams ranked in the Top 25 as North Alabama is
11th (181-12), West Florida is 13th (180-13) and
Valdosta State is ranked 15th (179-14).
