WONDER BOYS RANKED EIGHTH IN INITIAL NCAA D-II
SOUTH REGION GOLF POLL

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee has released its first Division II men’s golf regional rankings for the 2009 season. The rankings list the Top 10 teams in the each of the eight NCAA D-II regions.

Arkansas Tech is ranked eighth in the initial South Region rankings and is one of four teams from the Gulf South Conference in the first South Region poll of the season.

At the end of the season, the top 10 teams from each region, including automatic qualifier and the top four individuals not on one of the 10 teams that qualify for a region berth will compete in one of four 54-hole Super Regional Tournaments as part of the NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Championships. After Super Regional play, the top five teams and top two individuals not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2009 NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Championship at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Wash., which will be held from May 19-22.

In addition to Tech, the other GSC teams ranked in the first South Region poll are Valdosta State at No. 4, West Florida is ranked sixth and North Alabama is ranked seventh.

Nova Southeastern from the Sunshine State Conference headlines the first South Region poll and is followed by fellow conference members Florida Southern at No. 2, Lynn University at No. 3, Barry at No. 5 and Rollins at No. 10. The other team ranked in the first South Region poll is Flagler at No. 9. Flagler is an NCAA D-II independent school located in St. Augustine, Fla.

The Wonder Boys have qualified for NCAA Regional play five times as a team in school history, but its most recent appearance as a team came in 2004 when Tech finished seventh in the South Regional in Valdosta, Ga. Last season, senior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.) earned a berth in the South/South Central Super Regional as an individual and finished 13th overall after shooting a 213 for 54 holes.

In the latest Golfstat NCAA Division II rankings, Tech is ranked 22nd with a record of 170-23 and is one of four GSC teams ranked in the Top 25 as North Alabama is 11th (181-12), West Florida is 13th (180-13) and Valdosta State is ranked 15th (179-14).
