WONDER BOYS COMPLETE FIRST DAY OF 2009 GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THIRD PLACE

        HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech’s Men’s Golf completed the first day of action here at the 2009 Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield/GSC Golf Championships in third place out of 12 teams at the Hot Springs Country Club.

Tech fired a six-over par 582 over the first two rounds to head into Tuesday’s final round in third place. Tech is just four shots behind second place West Florida (578) and seven shots behind first-day leader North Alabama (575).

In Monday’s first day of action consisted of 36 holes of golf. In the first round, Tech carded a 291 and then fired another 291 in the second round. The 291 in the first round was tied for the second-best score of the round.

Leading the way for Tech and in the tournament is senior three-time All-GSC honoree Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.) Carlyle carded a first-day total of 140 to finish tied for the lead with North Alabama’s Brett Munson. Carlyle was one of only three golfers to shoot back-to-back below par rounds. Carlyle opened the tournament with a 71 in the first round and then carded a three-under par 69 in the second round.

In addition to Carlyle, senior B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas) shot a three-over par 147 to finish in a tie for 14th. Hawkins carded rounds of 73 and 74 respectively. Senior Taylor Wallner (Fayetteville, Ark.) fired a 148 (75, 73) to finish tied for 16th, while juniors Jonathon Spikes (Danville, Ark.) and Drew Richards (Prescott, Ark.) carded 154s to finish tied for 30th place. Spikes fired rounds of 79 and 75, while Richards carded rounds of 72 and 82.

The golfers will complete the two-day, 54-hole event by playing 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
