WONDER BOYS FINISH FOURTH AT UNA'S SPRING CLASSIC

        MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama – Arkansas Tech’s Men’s Golf team completed play here Tuesday at the North Alabama Spring Classic by finishing fourth out of 15 teams at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.

The Wonder Boys, who were in second place following Monday’s first round after shooting a 303, carded a 312 in Tuesday’s second round to finish in fourth place, two shots in front of fifth place Henderson State (617).

North Alabama, the tournament’s host team, took home the team title as the Lions shot a 36-hole total of 584, while Southwestern Oklahoma shot a 609 to finish in second place and Delta State carded a 611 to finish in third place.

Leading the way for Tech was junior B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas), who shot a five-over par 149 to finish in tie for fifth place. Hawkins carded a 72 in the first round and then fired a 77 in the final round.

UNA’s Brett Munson shot a two-day total of 142 (70, 72) to take home individual medalist honors, while UNA’s Daniel Creel shot a 144 (74, 70) to finish in second place.

Hawkins was one of eight players to be named to the All-Tournament team. Joining Hawkins on the All-Tournament were Munson, Creel, Lincoln University’s Rodolfo Gamino, UNA’s David Gies, Delta State’s Chase Smith, Henderson State’s Lourens Kleynhans and Delta State’s Austin Summers.

Other Tech finishers besides Hawkins were sophomore Jonathan Spikes (Danville, Ark.), who shot a 158 to finish tied for 31st place. Spikes had back-to-back rounds of 79. Junior Taylor Wallner (Fayetteville, Ark.) carded a 161 (75, 86) to finish in a tie for 39th place and sophomore Ryan Hitt (Allen, Texas) shot a 36-hole total of 164 (77, 87) to finish in a tie for 48th place. Junior Jarred Carlyle (Nashville, Ark.) shot a 70 in the second round, but was disqualified in the first round and didn’t figure in the team score.

The Wonder Boys will return to action on April 14-15 when they travel to Heber Springs, Ark., to compete at the Natural State Golf Classic at the Red Apple Inn and Golf Course.
