JARRED CARLYLE MOVES INTO THIRD-PLACE TIE AFTER SHOOTING
A FOUR-UNDER PAR 67 IN TUESDAY'S SECOND ROUND OF
SOUTH/SOUTH CENTRAL MEN'S GOLF SUPER REGIONAL
AUSTIN, Texas –
Arkansas
Tech junior Jarred Carlyle continued play here
Tuesday in the 2008 NCAA Division II South/South Central
Super Regional at the Grey Rock Golf Club by shooting a
four-under par 67 to move into a third-place tie with
Nova Southeastern’s Constantin Schwierz after 36 holes.
Carlyle, who is sitting at three-under par 139 after two
rounds of play, enters Wednesday’s final round in prime
position to earn a spot as an individual in next week’s
NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Championship. Only the top five
teams from the combined super regional and the top
individual not with one of the top five teams advance to
next week’s NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Championships at the
Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston.
“Jarred had a great round of golf today and put himself
into position to earn a spot in next week’s National
Championship Meet,” Wonder Boys Golf Coach Dave
Falconer said. “He needs to go out and perform
tomorrow like he did today.”
Entering Wednesday’s final round, Carlyle is one shot
behind Cameron’s Peter Svajlen in the race to earn the
individual spot in the NCAA D-II National Championship
Meet. Svajlen shot a one-under par 70 in Tuesday’s
second round and has shot a four-under par 138 after two
rounds. The other individuals are all at even-par or
one-over par heading into the final round of action.
Carlyle, a native of Nashville, Ark., is one of the 10
individuals from non-regional qualifying teams to earn a
berth in this year’s South/South Central Super Regional.
On Tuesday, he tied for Schwierz for the second-best
second round score with a 67, only St. Edwards’ Collin
Mayer’s six-under par 65 was better. In Monday’s first
round, Carlyle shot a one-over par 72 to finish in a tie
for 12th place.
On Tuesday, Carlyle opened by carding a three-under par
33 on the front nine, including having a bogey on the
par 5 No. 7 hole and then shot a one-under par 34 on the
back nine, which included a double-bogey on the par 5
No. 14 hole and an eagle on the par 4 No. 15 hole.
Carlyle, who is a three-time First-Team All-GSC
selection and earned All-Tournament honors for the third
consecutive season, averaged a team-best 72.6 in 16
rounds of golf and eight tournaments. This is the second
season that Carlyle is competing in the NCAA D-II
South/South Central Super Regional as he finished tied
for 26th place at last season’s meet after shooting a
224 for 54 holes at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in
Muscle Shoals, Ala.
Florida Southern’s Jude Eustaquio and West Florida’s
Kyle Scott lead the South Region after two rounds as
both of them have shot five-under par 137s. Mayer leads
the South Central Region with his eight-under par 134
after two rounds.
Among the 16 teams competing, St. Edward’s, the super
regional’s host school and West Florida each have shot
10-under par 558s to lead their respective regions after
two rounds. Nova Southeastern is in second place in the
South Region after firing a 36-hole total 564, while
North Alabama is in third place with a 575 and Florida
Southern is in fourth place with a 577.
