WONDER BOYS COMPLETE FIRST DAY OF 2008 GULF SOUTH
CONFERENCE MEN'S
GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS IN FOURTH PLACE
HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas –
Arkansas
Tech’s Men’s Golf completed the first day of action here
at the 2008 Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield/GSC Golf
Championships in fourth place out of 13 teams at Hot
Springs Country Club.
Tech fired a 20-over par 596 in the first two rounds to
head into Tuesday’s final round in fourth place. The
Wonder Boys, who finished third at last season’s GSC
Meet, are one shot in front of fifth place Valdosta
State (597) and two shots behind third place West
Georgia (594). Monday’s first day of action consisted of
the players playing 36 holes of golf. In the first
round, Tech shot a 303, but rebounded to shoot a 293 in
the second round, which was the third best score second
round score among the 13 teams.
“I was happy with the way our team rebounded in the
second round after shooting a 303 in the first round,”
Wonder Boys Head Coach Dave Falconer said. “In
order to have a chance to win, we need to shoot an even
lower score tomorrow than we shot in the second round.”
West Florida, the No. 1 team in the nation in both the
NCAA D-II South Region poll and the latest GCAA Top 25
Poll, shot a two-under par 574 to take the first day
lead. North Alabama, the No. 8 team in the South Region
and 17th-ranked team in the GCAA Top 25 Poll, carded a
seven-over par 583 to finish the first day in second
place.
Leading the way for Tech after 36 holes is junior
B.J. Hawkins (Winnsboro, Texas). Hawkins carded a
three-over par 147 to finish in a tie for 12th place.
Hawkins opened the tournament by shooting a one-under
par 71 and then fired a four-over par 76 in the second
round.
West Florida’s Kyle Scott shot a four-under par 140 (69,
71) to finish the first day in first place among the 64
golfers at the event. Harding’s Dusty Gourley, North
Alabama’s Wes Smith, West Florida’s Matthew Galloway and
Henderson State’s Jack Bartlett all shot even-par 144s
to finish in a tie for second place.
In addition to Hawkins, junior Jarred Carlyle
(Nashville, Ark.), a two-time First-Team All-GSC
selection, shot a four-over par 148 to finish in 15th
place. Carlyle, who shot a disappointing 79 in the first
round, carded a 69 in the second round. Carlyle’s
second-round 69 was tied for the lowest score in the
round with West Georgia’s Zach Lassetter. Sophomore
Jonathon Spikes (Danville, Ark.) shot a six-over par
150 (79, 71) to finish tied for 19th place, while
sophomore Ryan Hitt (Allen, Texas) fired a 36
hole total of nine-over par 153 (76, 77) to finish tied
for 27th place. The fifth finisher for Tech was junior
Scott Genoway (Calgary, Alberta), who shot a 13-over par
157 to finish in a tie for 42nd place.
