JARRED CARLYLE NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-GSC SELECTION FOR
THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE SEASON
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama
–
Arkansas
Tech’s Jarred Carlyle has been named a First-Team
All-Gulf South Conference Men's Golf selection on Friday
by the league office.
Carlyle became just the third three-time First-Team
All-GSC honoree in the history of the league and the
first Wonder Boy to earn that distinction. The other two
three-time First-Team honorees are West Florida’s Stuart
Manley (1998, 2000 and 2001) and Matthew Galloway (2006,
2007 and 2008).
The men’s golf coaches in the league voted for the team
and the coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their own
players.
West Florida, the No. 1 ranked in NCAA Division II and
the two-time defending GSC Champions, led the way with
four players on the two-team squad, including three
First-Team selections, while Henderson State, North
Alabama, Valdosta State and West Georgia each placed two
players apiece on one of the two All-GSC squads.
In the individual awards given out by the league,
Valdosta State’s Brent Witcher was named the GSC Player
of the Year, while Henderson State’s Jack Bartlett and
West Florida’s Tobias Rosendahl shared GSC Freshman of
the Year honors. West Florida’s Steve Fell was named the
GSC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season
and ninth time overall.
Carlyle,
a junior from Nashville, Ark., is a repeat first
team honoree after leading the way for Tech with a 72.6
scoring average in 13 rounds of golf and seven
tournaments this season. On the season, Carlyle has had
three Top 5 finishes, including taking home individual
medalist honors at the Natural State Classic this week
in Heber Springs, Ark., and has finished in the Top 25
at two other tournaments. At the Natural State Classic,
Carlyle shot a six-under par 136 to win the tournament.
On the season, he has had four rounds in the 60s,
including a season-best 67 in the final round of the
Natural State Classic.
Carlyle is joined on the All-GSC First Team by UWF’s
threesome of Galloway, Rosendahl and Kyle Scott, along
with Bartlett and Witcher.
Meanwhile, the Second-Team included Delta State’s Chase
Smith, Henderson State’s Ben Cuzen, North Alabama’s
twosome of Daniel Creel and Brent Munson, along with
Ouachita Baptist’s Rob Greer, Valdosta State’s Cole
Willis, West Florida’s Otto Bonning and West Georgia
teammates, Brandon Bennett and Nelson Alvarez.
Carlyle and the rest of the Wonder Boys will return to
action next week when they compete at the 2008 GSC Golf
Championships at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot
Springs, Ark. The meet will get underway with 36 holes
on Monday, April 21 and conclude with another 18 holes
on Tuesday, April 22. Tech finished third last season as
the Wonder Boys shot an 869 for the tournament.
