Coaching Experience:
Wilbers, who is a 16-year
coaching veteran in women's
basketball, enters his second season
at the helm of the Golden Suns, the
fourth all-time winningest NCAA
Division II women's basketball
program. In his first season
at Tech, Wilbers led the Golden Suns
to a 26-6 overall record and a berth
in the NCAA Division II Basketball
Tournament. Wilbers' first
team finished runner-up at the Gulf
South Conference Tournament,
advanced to the second round of the
NCAA D-II South Regional and
finished the season with a No. 16
ranking in the final WBCA Top 25
Coaches' Poll. In addition,
Amanda Grappe became the
program's 14th different Golden Sun
player to earn All-American honors
in 2007-08. Prior to coming to
Tech, Wilbers spent six years as an assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at Oral
Roberts University, an NCAA Division
I school in Tulsa, Okla., that is a
member of the Mid-Continent
Conference. While at ORU, Wilbers
was responsible for recruiting three
straight heralded recruiting classes
that helped the Golden Eagles to win
two Mid-Con Tournament
championships, two Mid-Con regular
season titles and earn two berths in
the NCAA Women's Basketball
Tournament. In addition, ORU earned
a WNIT bid the season (2006) it
failed to earn an NCAA berth. Prior
to Oral Roberts, Wilbers spent three
season on Cindy Stein's staff at the
University of Missouri of the Big 12
Conference, as the first assistant
coach and recruiting coordinator.
While at Missouri, the Lady Tigers
made it to the Sweet 16 of the 2001
NCAA Basketball Tournament and
finished with a 22-10 overall
record. In his three years in
Columbia, Mo., the Lady Tigers
showed consistent improvement as
they won 13 games in 1988-89, 18
games in 1989-90 and 22 games in
2000-01. Before heading to
Missouri, Wilbers served as the
assistant women's basketball and
head volleyball coach at Seward
County Community College in Liberal,
Kan., for five years (1993-98).
While at Seward, Wilbers helped lead
the women's basketball program to an
overall record of 143-21 and four
Jayhawk Conference Western Division
Championships ('94, '96, '97 and
'98). In addition, SCCC made two
straight appearances (1996-97 and
1997-98) in the NJCAA Region IV
Final Four. Wilbers volleyball teams
at Seward set a school record for
wins and winning percentage in 1996,
going 54-6 (.900) and finishing
second in the Jayhawk Conference
Western Division. The 1996
volleyball squad at SCCC finished
the season with a No. 9 national
ranking. Wilbers began his college
coaching career in 1992 at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City.
In addition to his college coaching
experience, Wilbers also spent one
season (1991-92) as the head girls
basketball and softball coach at
Welch High School in Welch, Okla. He
also served as an assistant football
coach at WHS. He also spent one year
(1990-91) coaching high school
basketball at Putnam City High
School in Putnam City, Okla.
At Tech:
Wilbers was named Tech's sixth
women's head coach on April 30,
2007. He will be entering his second season
with the Golden Suns program in
2008-09. In his first season with
the Golden Suns in 2007-08, Wilbers
led Tech to 26-6 record and a No. 16
ranking in the final USA Today/ESPN
WBCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Along the
way, Tech finished as runners-up at
the GSC Tournament for the second
consecutive season and advanced to
the second round of the NCAA
Division II South Regional for the
second straight year.
Personal:
Wilbers is 40 years old. He was
born December 18, 1967 in Kansas
City, Missouri. He is married to the former
Christina Urton and the couple have
two children, a daughter, Bailey (10)
and a son, Brett (5).

Previous Experience:
Pacheco, who has vast experience
coaching internationally, enters his
first season as an assistant coach
for the Golden Suns after serving
last year as a Graduate Assistant
Coach on Dave Wilbers' staff. Previously, before coming to
Tech, Pacheco was the Head Men’s
Basketball Coach for the Basketball
Association of Itajai (Itajai, SC,
Brazil) where he led a team made up
of 16 to 19 year olds. While there,
he competed in the Santa Catarina
State Tournament. Prior to that, in
2005-06, Pacheco was the Head Men’s
Basketball Coach in the Association
of the Itajai Valley (Balneario
Camboriu, SC, Brazil). While there,
he coaced 15 to 18 year olds and he
earned a second place finish at the
Santa Catarina Open Games. Pacheco
also served as the Santa Catarina
Team Coach where he obtained the
Brazilian Championship with kids
ages 14 to 16, as well as, holding the
State Champions title for the
Student Olympic Games of Santa Catarina. Pacheco has also served as
a physical education teacher at the
Middle School Pedro Paulo Rebelo (Itajai,
Brazil). While in that position,
Pacheco taught the basis of physical
activities and sports initiation,
supervised promotional events, and
designed promotional materials.
Pacheco also served as a Student
Teacher for Basketball at the
Federal University of Santa Catarina
from 2001-03. In that role, Pacheco
helped assist in teaching methods
during practice and he also lectured
the principles of basketball to
students from other schools. During
his time as an undergraduate
student, Pacheco gained valuable
experience on a four-month foreign
exchange program where he served as
a student assistant to the men’s
basketball team at Kennesaw State
University in Kennesaw, Ga. While at
Kennesaw, Pacheco assisted the
coaches with day-to-day practices,
worked as coordinator for in game
operations, and taped practices and
games.
At Tech:
Pacheco will begin his first
season as a full-time assistant
coach with the Golden Suns after
serving as a graduate assistant
coach during the 2007-08 season.
Personal:
Pacheco is 28 years old. He was born
on January 12, 1980 in Itajai, SC,
Brazil. He is the son of Julio and
Elizabeth Pacheco. |
