GOLDEN SUNS CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES SECOND AT
HENDRIX COLLEGE'S ORANGE CRUSH INVITATIONAL

        CONWAY, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech Women’s Cross Country continued its cross country season here this past Saturday as the Golden Suns finished second out of seven teams at Hendrix College’s Orange Crush Invitational.

Tech, who scored 55 points in the meet, finished 22 points behind Southern Arkansas (33 points), the meet’s champion and 14 points in front of third place, Ouachita Baptist (69 points).

“I thought our team ran a good meet and competed well,” Tech Head Cross Country Coach Tom Aspel said.

Leading the way for Tech was freshman Lauren Karnitz (DeSoto, Kan.). Karnitz ran a team-best time of 20:15.67 over the 5,000-meter course to finish in third place. In addition to Karnitz, freshman Carrie Sowers (Dardanelle, Ark.) ran a season-best time 20:54.09 to finish in 11th place.

Southern Arkansas’ Kendall Mears took home the women’s individual title as she ran the course in a time of 19:35.12, while Hendrix’s Laura Broederdorf finished second after running a time a 19:44.70.

Other finishers for Tech behind Karnitz and Sowers were freshman Julia Huie (Clinton, Ark.), who ran a time 20:54.41 to finish in 12th place, while junior Kayla Waldrup (El Dorado, Ark.) ran a time of 20:57.78 to finish in 13th place and junior Brianna Greene (Harrison, Ark.) finished in 16th place after running a time of 21:33.70. The Tech contingent was completed by freshman Amber Tury (Heber Springs, Ark.), who ran a time of 22:32.05 to finish in 31st place, sophomore Elizabeth Thias (Paris, Ark.), who finished in 44th place after running a time of 27:05.78 over the 5,000-meter course and junior Molly Fleming (Ward, Ark.), who ran a time of 28:07.19 to finish in 46th place.  

The Golden Suns will continue its season on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to compete at the Brooks/Memphis Twilight Classic.
