GOLDEN SUNS FINISH TIED FOR SEVENTH WITH WEST FLORIDA
AT NCAA D-II SOUTH REGIONAL MEET

        HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Arkansas Tech’s Women’s Cross Country team concluded its 2007 season here Saturday by finishing tied for seventh with West Florida at the NCAA South Regional Meet hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville and held at Sharon Johnston Park.

Tech, who entered the meet ranked ninth in the latest NCAA South Region poll, scored 255 points to finish 15 points in front of Southern Arkansas (270 points) and 33 points behind sixth-place Columbus State (222 points). Tampa won the 23-team meet with 40 points, while Harding, the GSC Champion, finished second with 55 points and UAH, the host team, ran third after scoring 79 points.

“I am really pleased with the way our team ran today,” Golden Suns Cross Country Coach Tom Aspel said. “All of our runners ran season-best times and this is a good way to close out the season.”

Leading the way for Tech was freshman Lauren Karnitz (DeSoto, Kan.), who ran the 6,000-meter course in a season-best time of 23:38 to finish in 28th place overall.

Harding’s Janee Jones took home individual medalist honors as she ran a time of 21.17, while Tampa’s Laura Woznicki finished second after running the course in a time of 21.19.

Other finishers for Tech were Melissa Pollreis (Gravette, Ark.), who ran the course in a career-best time of 24:26 to finish in 48th place overall, while freshman Carrie Sowers (Dardanelle, Ark.) ran a season-best time of 24:27 to finish in 51st place overall. Junior Kayla Waldrup (El Dorado, Ark.) ran a season-best time of 24:48 to finish in 67th place and junior Brianna Greene (Harrison, Ark.) finished in 72nd place after running a season-best time of 24:55. The final two finishers for the Golden Suns were freshman Amber Tury (Heber Springs, Ark.) and freshman Julia Huie (Clinton, Ark.). Tury ran a season-best time of 25:27 to finish in 90th place, while Huie ran a season-best time of 25:43 to finish in 102nd place.
