KRISHNA BAKER NAMED THIS WEEK'S GSC WEST
DIVISION
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE,
Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech’s Krishna Baker has been named the
Gulf South Conference’s West Division Women’s Basketball
Player of the Week for the second time this season by
the league office after her stellar performances in
helping the 10th-ranked Golden Suns to GSC victories
last week over Harding and Arkansas-Monticello.
Baker,
a 6-foot forward from Little Rock, Ark., earned this
week’s Player of the Week honor after averaging 19.5
points and 9.5 rebounds per game and shot 64 percent
from the field in helping Tech improve to 22-3 overall
on the season and 11-1 in the GSC West Division.
It was the eighth time this season that Tech has had a
Player of the Week as junior forward Amanda Grappe
(Benton, Ark.) has been honored five times this season
(Dec. 12, Jan. 2,
Jan. 29, Feb. 13, Feb. 20),
while senior center Ruby Vaden (Blytheville,
Ark.) was honored on Jan. 8 and Baker was honored on
Jan. 23.
Baker opened the week with 19 points and 10 rebounds to
post her seventh double-double of the season in Tech’s
77-62 win last Thursday at home over Harding and then
tallied 20 points and had nine rebounds in Tech’s
hard-fought 71-68 win this past Saturday at
Arkansas-Monticello. Against the Lady Bisons, Baker was
7-for-10 from the field, including connecting on a
three-pointer and 4-for-5 at the free throw line and
then shot 9-for-15 from the field and added two blocks
in 30 minutes of action against the Cotton Blossoms.
On the season, Baker, a Second-Team All-GSC selection
and a GSC All-Tournament honoree last season, is
averaging 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per
game and is shooting 56 percent from the floor and 75
percent from the free throw line. She has had 20
double-digit scoring efforts, including 11 straight and
has had seven double-digit rebounding performances on
the season. In her career at Tech, Baker has scored 672
points and pulled down 263 rebounds and has had 34
career double figure scoring contests and eight career
double-doubles.
In addition to Baker, Montevallo junior guard Jamie
Graham, a native of Twin Groves, Ark., was named the
East Division Player of the Week.
Baker and her Golden Sun teammates return to action on
Thursday, Feb. 28, when they host top-ranked Delta State
(24-0 overall, 12-0 GSC). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
at Tucker Coliseum. The game will mark the final home
game for Tech’s seniors – Baker, forward Daiane
Domingos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and center Ruby
Vaden (Blytheville, Ark.). Tech fell 65-63 earlier
this season to Delta State in Cleveland, Miss.
