GOLDEN SUNS REMAIN THIRD IN LATEST
SOUTH REGION RANKINGS

The NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee has
released its sixth Division II women’s basketball
regional rankings for the 2007-08 season. The rankings
list the Top 10 teams in the each of the NCAA’s D-II
regions.
Tech, who is 23-4 overall, 12-2 in the GSC West Division
and 19-4 in the South Region, remains third in this
week’s poll after going 1-1 last week, with the loss
being a 73-71 setback at home to undefeated and No. 1
ranked Delta State. Tech, who is ranked 13th in this
week’s USA Today/ESPN WBCA D-II Top 25 Coaches’
Poll, is one of five Gulf South Conference schools in
the sixth regional poll of the season.
At the end of the season, the top eight teams from each
region will receive bids to the 64-team NCAA D-II
Tournament. To be considered for selection into the
national tournament, each team must play at least 16
games against teams within its region or against
Division II schools in contiguous states. The regional
rankings will be released every Wednesday through March
5. The top team in each region will have an opportunity
to host the first two rounds of the 64-team National
Championship Tournament. Only games played against NCAA
D-II institutions are considered by the committee.
For the sixth successive week, Delta State (26-0
overall, 20-0 Region), one of the three remaining
undefeated teams in Division II, remains atop the South
Region poll and is followed by West Georgia (24-3
overall and 23-3 Region) at No. 2. Tech is third, while
Valdosta State (22-4 overall and 20-4 Region) moves up
two spots this week to No. 6 and Harding (18-9 overall
and 14-9 Region) falls one spot to No. 8 this week.
Other teams in this week’s sixth South Regional poll
include Tampa (22-5, 20-4 Region) at No. 4, Nova
Southeastern (21-6, 18-5 Region) at No. 5 and Tuskegee
(18-9, 18-7 Region) is at No. 7. Fort Valley State
(18-9, 17-7 Region) and Rollins [FL] (17-9, 16-9 Region)
are ranked 9th and 10th respectively this week.
Tech will return to action on Thursday, March 6, when
they open up play in the 2008 GSC Tournament against
West Alabama at 12:30 p.m. at the DeSoto County Civic
Center in Southaven, Miss. Tech is 2-0 this season
against the Lady Tigers as they posted a 76-74 overtime
win in Livingston, Ala., on Dec. 1 and then collected a
77-69 win in Russellville on Jan. 5.
