GOLDEN SUNS REMAIN THIRD IN LATEST D-II

The NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee has
released its fifth Division II women’s basketball
regional rankings for the 2007-08 season. The rankings
list the Top 10 teams in the each of the NCAA’s D-II
regions.
Tech, who is 22-3 overall, 11-1 in the GSC West Division
and 18-3 in the South Region, remains third in this
week’s poll after being fourth for two consecutive
weeks. Tech, who is ranked 10th in this week’s USA
Today/ESPN WBCA D-II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, is one of
five Gulf South Conference schools in the fifth regional
poll of the season.
At the end of the season, the top eight teams from each
region will receive bids to the 64-team NCAA D-II
Tournament. To be considered for selection into the
national tournament, each team must play at least 16
games against teams within its region or against
Division II schools in contiguous states. The regional
rankings will be released every Wednesday through March
5. The top team in each region will have an opportunity
to host the first two rounds of the 64-team National
Championship Tournament. Only games played against NCAA
D-II institutions are considered by the committee.
For the fifth successive week, Delta State (24-0
overall, 18-0 Region), one of the three remaining
undefeated teams in Division II, remains atop the South
Region poll and is followed by West Georgia (23-3
overall and 23-3 Region) at No. 2. Tech is third, while
Harding (17-8 overall, 13-8 Region) moves up one spot to
No. 7 and Valdosta State (22-4 overall, 19-4 Region)
falls two spots to No. 8 this week.
Other teams in this week’s fifth South Region poll
include Tampa (20-5, 18-4 Region) at No. 4, Nova
Southeastern (19-6, 16-5 Region) at No. 5 and Tuskegee
(17-7, 17-5 Region) is ranked sixth. Barry (17-8, 14-6
Region) and Fort Valley State (17-9, 16-7 Region) round
out this week’s poll at Nos. 9 and 10 respectively.
The Golden Suns will return to action on Thursday when
they welcome top-ranked Delta State for a 5:30 p.m.
match-up at Tucker Coliseum. Tech fell 65-63 to the Lady
Statesmen in Cleveland, Miss., on Jan. 31.
