WONDER BOYS BASKETBALL RANKED FOURTH IN INITIAL
NCAA DIVISION II SOUTH REGION RANKINGS
INDIANAPOLIS,
Indiana –
The NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee has
released the first Division II men’s basketball regional
rankings for the 2007-08 season. The rankings list the
Top 10 teams in the each of the NCAA’s D-II regions.
Tech, who is 13-5 overall, 4-1 in the GSC West Division
and 8-3 in the South Region, is ranked fourth in the
initial South Region rankings. Tech is one of five Gulf
South Conference schools ranked in the first regional
poll of the season.
At the end of the season, the top eight teams from each
region will receive bids to the 64-team NCAA D-II
Tournament. To be considered for selection into the
national tournament, each team must play at least 16
games against teams within its region or against
Division II schools in contiguous states. The regional
rankings will be released every Wednesday through
February 5. The top team in each region will have an
opportunity to host the first two rounds of the 64-team
National Championship Tournament. Only games played
against NCAA D-II institutions are considered by the
committee.
Other GSC teams in the first South Region rankings are
North Alabama (16-7, 12-4 Region) at No. 3, West Georgia
(11-7, 10-6 Region) at No. 7, Alabama-Huntsville (11-9,
9-6 Region) is at No. 8, while Harding (10-8, 6-6
Region) is ranked 10th. UNA and Tech have each split
games this season as the Lions defeated Tech (94-74) in
Russellville and the Wonder Boys picked up a 100-90 over
UNA in Florence, Ala.
Tampa, who is from the Sunshine State Conference,
headlines the first South Region poll as they are 12-4
overall and 10-2 in South Region games. Florida Southern
(15-4, 12-3 Region) is at No. 2 and Benedict (9-4, 9-4
Region) checks in at No. 5. Rollins [FL] (13-3, 8-3
Region) is ranked No. 6 and is followed by Florida Tech
(12-3, 10-3 Region) at No. 9.
Tech will return to action on Thursday when they travel
to Cleveland, Miss., to face Delta State (9-8 overall,
3-2 GSC) in an 8 p.m. match-up at Walter Sillers
Coliseum on the DSU campus.
