CALEB POWERS NAMED GSC WEST DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – This past Sunday, Arkansas Tech pitcher Caleb Powers threw his first career complete game shutout. On Tuesday, Powers was named the Gulf South Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala.

Powers, a native of Dover, Ark., went the distance in Tech’s 5-0 win over Christian Brothers this past Sunday, allowing just four hits, while walking one and striking out seven. In addition, the right-hander tossed a perfect inning of relief in Tech’s 4-3 loss to West Florida last Wednesday.

For the week, Powers compiled a 1-0 record and an 0.00 earned run average. In 10 innings of work, Powers allowed just four hits and no runs, while walking one and striking out seven.

On the season, Powers is 3-1 with a 4.40 ERA. The sophomore has made 12 appearances for the Wonder Boys, including five starts, and is second on the team with 35 strikeouts and 43 innings pitched.

Powers becomes the second Tech pitcher to be named the GSC West Division Pitcher of the Week, as junior southpaw Blaine Sims (Scott, Ark.) won the award three weeks ago.

In addition to Powers, Ouachita Baptist junior first baseman Will Gowdy was named the West Division Player of the Week, while West Alabama senior first baseman Rob Dahlberg and West Florida senior pitcher Kevin Johnson were named the East Division Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively.

Powers and the Wonder Boys will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Magnolia, Ark., to take on fifth-ranked Southern Arkansas in a GSC showdown. Tech enters the series having won six consecutive conference games and is sitting in second place in the West Division standings with a 7-2 mark and are 19-20 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Muleriders are 28-7 on the season and 8-1 in the GSC. All three games of this weekend’s SAU series will be broadcast live on the radio on KCAB (980 FM) in the Russellville area and also on the internet at http://athletics.atu.edu.
