WONDER BOYS TAKE BOTH ENDS OF DOUBLEHEADER TO COMPLETE
GSC SERIES SWEEP OVER CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys Baseball team completed a
series sweep over Gulf South Conference rival Christian
Brothers with a pair of victories Sunday afternoon at
Buc Field.
Tech won the first game 5-0 (Box
Score) behind sophomore Caleb Powers’
(Dover, Ark.) first career complete game shutout and
then senior second baseman Josh Holloway
(Booneville, Ark.) belted two home runs as Tech picked
up a 6-2 victory (Box
Score) in the second game.
With the sweep, Tech has now won six
consecutive conference games as the Wonder Boys improve
to 19-20 overall on the season and 7-2 in the GSC, while
CBU falls to 7-19 and 0-5 in league play.
In game one, Tech opened the scoring with a
four-run second inning. Junior left fielder Jeremy
Houchin (Springdale, Ark.) and freshman shortstop
Tyler Shaw (St. Mary’s, Ga.) had RBI singles in the
inning, while junior third baseman Tyler Taunton
(Shreveport, La.) produced a sacrifice fly and Holloway
drove in a run on fielder’s choice.
Tech scored the game’s final run in the third
inning on a RBI double by senior first baseman Robbie
Hohler (Searcy, Ark.).
Powers (3-1) went the distance to get the win,
allowing just four hits, while walking one and striking
out seven. It was the second straight nine inning
complete game for the Wonder Boys as junior Karl Whitley
(Tucson, Ariz.) tossed a complete game in Saturday’s 8-1
win over the Bucs.
Cary Crain (1-3) took the loss for CBU,
allowing five runs on six hits, with three walks and two
strikeouts in six innings.
In the nightcap, Tech trailed 2-1 after four
innings before plating four runs in the fifth to take a
5-2 lead.
Tech’s first run came on a solo home run by
Holloway in the third inning.
In the fifth, Hohler scored on a wild pitch, senior
centerfielder Chad Wynn (Bono, Ark.) delivered a
RBI single and Holloway crushed a two-run homer.
Sophomore southpaw Blaine Sims (Scott,
Ark.) pitched four innings to earn his first career
victory and improve to 1-4 on the season. Senior
Barrett Davis (North Little Rock, Ark.) worked two
innings in relief, allowing one hit and fanning one and
junior Josh Floriani (Malvern, Ark.) came on to
get the game’s final three outs.
CBU’s Ryan McCabe was handed the loss,
allowing five runs on five hits, with two walks and
three strikeouts in six innings.
Holloway led Tech’s offense, going 3-for-7 in
the doubleheader, with two homers and four RBIs, while
Hohler also had three hits in the twinbill.
Josh Shelton led the way for the Bucs, going
for 4-for-8 with an RBI on the day and Will Wilson
collected three hits in the doubleheader.
The Wonder Boys will be back in action on Tuesday, March
31, when they step out of GSC play to face Williams
Baptist in a doubleheader in Walnut Ridge, Ark. The
first pitch of Tuesday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 2
p.m.
