WONDER BOYS TAKE BOTH ENDS OF DOUBLEHEADER TO COMPLETE
GSC SERIES SWEEP OVER CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys Baseball team completed a series sweep over Gulf South Conference rival Christian Brothers with a pair of victories Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.

Tech won the first game 5-0 (Box Score) behind sophomore Caleb Powers’ (Dover, Ark.) first career complete game shutout and then senior second baseman Josh Holloway (Booneville, Ark.) belted two home runs as Tech picked up a 6-2 victory (Box Score) in the second game.

With the sweep, Tech has now won six consecutive conference games as the Wonder Boys improve to 19-20 overall on the season and 7-2 in the GSC, while CBU falls to 7-19 and 0-5 in league play.

In game one, Tech opened the scoring with a four-run second inning. Junior left fielder Jeremy Houchin (Springdale, Ark.) and freshman shortstop Tyler Shaw (St. Mary’s, Ga.) had RBI singles in the inning, while junior third baseman Tyler Taunton (Shreveport, La.) produced a sacrifice fly and Holloway drove in a run on fielder’s choice.

Tech scored the game’s final run in the third inning on a RBI double by senior first baseman Robbie Hohler (Searcy, Ark.).

Powers (3-1) went the distance to get the win, allowing just four hits, while walking one and striking out seven. It was the second straight nine inning complete game for the Wonder Boys as junior Karl Whitley (Tucson, Ariz.) tossed a complete game in Saturday’s 8-1 win over the Bucs.

Cary Crain (1-3) took the loss for CBU, allowing five runs on six hits, with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.

In the nightcap, Tech trailed 2-1 after four innings before plating four runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

Tech’s first run came on a solo home run by Holloway in the third inning.

In the fifth, Hohler scored on a wild pitch, senior centerfielder Chad Wynn (Bono, Ark.) delivered a RBI single and Holloway crushed a two-run homer.

Sophomore southpaw Blaine Sims (Scott, Ark.) pitched four innings to earn his first career victory and improve to 1-4 on the season. Senior Barrett Davis (North Little Rock, Ark.) worked two innings in relief, allowing one hit and fanning one and junior Josh Floriani (Malvern, Ark.) came on to get the game’s final three outs.

CBU’s Ryan McCabe was handed the loss, allowing five runs on five hits, with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Holloway led Tech’s offense, going 3-for-7 in the doubleheader, with two homers and four RBIs, while Hohler also had three hits in the twinbill.

Josh Shelton led the way for the Bucs, going for 4-for-8 with an RBI on the day and Will Wilson collected three hits in the doubleheader.

The Wonder Boys will be back in action on Tuesday, March 31, when they step out of GSC play to face Williams Baptist in a doubleheader in Walnut Ridge, Ark. The first pitch of Tuesday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
