TONY SANCHEZ NAMED GSC WEST DIVISION BASEBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Arkansas Tech’s Tony Sanchez has been named the
Gulf South Conference’s West Division Baseball Player of
the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala.
Sanchez,
a junior third baseman from Mesquite, Texas, earned the
honor after setting a new school and GSC with 11 hits in
11 consecutive at-bats over the course of four games.
Sanchez’s streak began against Lyon College on Feb. 10
and continued last week as he went 13-for-15 at the
plate with six runs scored and 4 RBIs. In addition, he
had two doubles and a homer as the Wonder Boys 4-0 last
week. Against Southwest Baptist, Sanchez went 8-for-8 at
the plate with four runs scored, 2 RBIs and two doubles,
while he went 5-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored,
2 RBIs and a homer in last Friday’s two wins over
Northwest Missouri State.
For the week, Sanchez hit .867 and had a slugging
percentage of 1.400 and an on-base percentage .875.
On the season, Sanchez is hitting a team-best .524 with
22 hits and 11 runs scored. In addition, he has seven
doubles, two home runs and 6 RBIs and has a slugging
percentage of .833 and an on-base percentage of .535.
In addition to Sanchez, Ouachita Baptist junior
righthanded pitcher Jarod Hershberger was named the West
Division’s Pitcher of the Week. In the East Division,
Alabama-Huntsville sophomore third baseman Nick Huckaby
and West Alabama senior righthanded pitcher Brandon Dill
were named the Player and Pitcher of the Week
respectively.
Sanchez and the Wonder Boys (8-3 overall on the season)
return to action this weekend when they travel to
Livingston, Ala., to face 12th-ranked West Alabama for a
three-game series. The teams will open the series with a
doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23 beginning at 1 p.m.
and will conclude the series with a nine inning game on
Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
