TECH BASEBALL BEATEN BY NORTHEASTERN STATE IN 10 INNINGS
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. –
The Northeastern State River Hawks were able to avenge a
3-2 loss suffered at Tech Field on March 11 by defeating
the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys by the score of 5-4 in
extra innings at Rousey Field Tuesday afternoon.
Justin Delay was the hero for the River Hawks
as his one out double in the bottom of the 10th inning
plated Kevin Campbell who had reached on an error. It
was Delay’s only hit and only RBI in the contest.
Tech was able to dent the scoreboard in their
first time at bat as Josh Holloway (Booneville,
Ark.) led the game off with a double. Junior Tony
Sanchez (Mesquite, Texas) then singled him in.
Sanchez would later score when senior Brad Green
(Cabot, Ark.) reached safely on a fielder’s choice.
The River Hawks got one in the bottom half of
the first when Blake Neighbors doubled, moved to third
on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a passed ball.
NSU went on to take the lead in the bottom of the third
as Brett Roberts hit a solo homerun to tie the game, and
then Kyle Davidson doubled which scored Scott Sittell
who reached after being hit by a pitch.
Tech came back to tie the game in the top of
the fifth when Holloway singled, stole second and then
scored on an RBI single by senior Jantzen Black
(Greenwood, Ark.). Tech then regained the lead in the
top of the seventh in a similar manner. Holloway led
things off with a single, advanced to second on an error
by the center fielder and then scored on a base hit by
Black.
The River Hawks had an answer in their half,
however. A hit batsman, a single, and a sacrifice bunt
allowed Davidson to push across the tying run on a
sacrifice fly to center field.
Each team was held scoreless until the bottom
of the 10th when NSU claimed the game which moved Tech’s
record to 21-21 overall this season. The River Hawks
improved to 21-26 with the victory.
Jacob Lago was rewarded with the victory in
the contest for NSU. He pitched three solid innings of
relief allowing just three hits and no runs while
striking out three. Blake Bailey (Malvern, Ark.)
took the loss for Tech, although he pitched very well.
Bailey pitched the majority of the game out of the pen
going 6 1/3 innings allowing only five hits, two runs,
one of which was earned while recording three
strikeouts.
The Wonder Boys return to Gulf South
Conference play this weekend when they travel to Searcy
to take on the Harding Bisons in a vital three-game
series. Currently the Wonder Boys have a conference
record of 8-9 while the Bisons have a record of 7-9.
Each team is fighting for that fourth and final spot in
the GSC tournament in Millington, Tenn. The teams will
play a doubleheader on Saturday which will get underway
at 12 p.m. The series will be completed on Sunday
afternoon with one nine inning game which is scheduled
to begin at 1 p.m.
