TECH BASEBALL TAKES RUBBER GAME OVER
OUACHITA BAPTIST SUNDAY
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team erased a 7-2
deficit by scoring seven runs of their own in the final
two frames to get the 9-7 victory over nationally 21st
ranked Ouachita Baptist.
Tony Sanchez (Mesquite, Texas) drove in
five runs and scored twice himself to lead the Wonder
Boys offensively. Tech senior Jantzen Black
(Greenwood, Ark.) had two-run triple in the bottom of
the eighth inning, which scored Sanchez and shortstop
Josh Holloway (Booneville, Ark.), to propel the
Wonder Boys to victory.
Craig Cameron (Knoxville, Iowa) pitched
five and one thirds innings in relief to pick up the
victory for the Wonder Boys. He was brilliant allowing
just two runs on five hits while striking out one.
Cody Taylor (Jacksonville, Texas) picked up his
second save of the season as he pitched two thirds of an
inning, striking out both batters he faced.
Relief pitcher Jerry Helferich was guilty of
the loss for Ouachita Baptist. He pitched one and one
thirds innings allowing three runs on two hits and a
walk.
Tech struck first in the scoring column, as
Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to left field which plated
Wonder Boys right fielder Hayden Miller
(Sherwood, Ark.), who was 3 for 3 in the contest.
Things started to turn ugly in the top of the
fourth, however, when OBU scored five runs on two hits
and two Tech errors. Tech countered with a run in the
fifth as Sanchez drove in Austin Gwatney
(Sherwood, Ark.) on a groundout to shortstop. The Tigers
would then bring two more runs across in the top of the
sixth as an RBI single by Blake Lockwood and a sacrifice
fly by catcher Jim Streicher made the score 7-2 in favor
of OBU.
The Wonder Boys fought back in it in the
seventh inning as Sanchez and Justin Bollig
(Moore, Okla.) each had two-run singles, which cut the
lead to 7-6.
Sanchez then got his fifth RBI on the day when
he drove in Tyler Kellar (Morrillton, Ark.) off
of southpaw Zach Wilbanks to tie the game before Black’s
two-run go ahead triple.
The Wonder Boys return to Tech Field Wednesday
evening at 6 p.m. for their final home game of the 2008
season. Tech will play host to University of Ozarks, a
game which had been originally scheduled for April 8 but
was moved due to rain.
