TECH BASEBALL DROPS HOME GSC DOUBLEHEADER
TO CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team dropped a
pair of Gulf South Conference baseball games to the
Christian Brothers Buccaneers Saturday afternoon at Tech
Field by the scores of 9-8 and 10-4. With the losses
Tech’s record dropped to 17-13 and 6-2 in GSC play.
Game 1 – Christian
Brothers 9, Arkansas Tech 8
A ninth inning solo homerun by CBU right fielder Bobby
Lawrence proved to be the difference as Tech was unable
to push a run across the plate in the bottom of the
ninth and the Buccaneers were awarded their fourth
conference win of the year. Lawrence finished the game
going 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs.
The Bucs led by the score of 8-7 going into
the bottom of the eighth inning but Tech was able to tie
the game up on a Josh Holloway (Booneville, Ark.)
RBI single that scored freshman outfielder Tyler Tate
(Fort Smith, Ark.) who had put himself into scoring
position by stealing second.
Tech threatened in the ninth inning as
Jantzen Black (Greenwood, Ark.) led off the
inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a
beautiful sacrifice bunt by freshman designated hitter
Jonathan Houston (Conway, Ark.). Black would
advance as far as third on a groundout but was stranded
there as CBU pitcher Steven Thomas was able to record to
final out to pick up the victory for the Bucs.
Thomas, whose record now stands at 1-0 on the
year, came on in relief of starter John Daush who hurled
seven innings allowing nine hits, seven runs, giving up
three walks and striking out one.
Cody Taylor (Jacksonville, Texas) was
hit with the loss for the Wonder Boys. He relieved
starting pitcher Zach Weiss (Barnhart, Mo.) in
the sixth inning. Taylor tossed four innings, giving up
four runs on seven hits while striking out two.
Offensively, the Wonder Boys were led by Tate
who reached base all five times as he was 3 for 3 with
three RBIs and two runs scored. Tate also drew a walk,
was hit by a pitch, and stole three bases. Black had a
pair of hits, two RBIs and a stolen base of his own.
Catcher Justin Bollig (Moore, Okla.) also added
three hits for Tech.
CBU, who pounded out 18 hits in the game, was
led by first baseman Joseph Kaminski as he went 4 for 5
with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated
hitter Will Britt also had a pair of RBIs in the
ballgame.
Game 2 – Christian
Brothers 10, Arkansas Tech 4
CBU completed the doubleheader sweep of the Wonder Boys
as they got 10 runs on 15 more hits, giving them a total
of 33 hits on the day, at Tech Field Saturday evening.
In addition to the 15 hits, CBU starting
pitcher Dave Delugach got the victory by throwing a
complete game. He was solid as he only allowed nine Tech
hits and four runs.
Craig Cameron (Knoxville, Iowa) was
saddled with the loss for the Wonder Boys. His record
fell to 2-2 on the year.
Kaminski had another nice game for CBU going 3
for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Britt also had two
more RBIs as he was 2 for 3 in game two. Left fielder
Josh Shelton finished the game 2 for 3 with three runs
scored and an RBI of his own.
For Tech, Black finished the contest 2 for 3
at the dish with a run scored. With Black’s second
inning double to left field he extended his hitting
streak to 28 games. The 28 game hitting streak now
stands as the fifth longest in GSC history.
Tate continued to hit the ball well and be a
menace on the bases as he was 2 for 4 with two runs
scored and a stolen base. That stolen base was Tate’s
twentieth on the year.
The Wonder Boys are back in action Sunday
afternoon to try to save at least one game of the
three-game set with CBU. The first pitch is scheduled to
be thrown at 1 p.m. at Tech Field.
