TECH BASEBALL SWEEPS COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO

MONTICELLO, Arkansas – The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team earned used a three-run first, a four-run fourth and 12 stolen bases to defeat the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello 11-5 to complete the series sweep.

Tech’s 12 stolen bases were a school record. It is the most since Tech stole 10 of 10 bases against Minnesota-Morris on March 24, 1993.

Of Tech’s 12 stolen bases, freshman Austin Gwatney (Sherwood, Ark.) was able to steal six. Gwatney’s six stolen bases are a school and Gulf South Conference record. The previous record was five stolen bases which was held by six different players, most recently by Tech’s Ed Duncan in a game against Christian Brothers in 1999.

UAM starting pitcher Stuart Morgan was drilled by Tech hitters for 10 hits, nine runs over five and one third innings. Relief pitcher Chris Whatley struggled with the Tech line-up as well allowing two runs over three and two thirds.

Tech’s offense was led by junior Tony Sanchez (Mesquite, Texas) who enjoyed a 2 for 4 day at the dish, driving in three runs and stealing two bases. Leadoff man Tyler Tate (Fort Smith, Ark.) reached base five times and successfully stole three bases himself. He drew three walks in addition to going 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jantzen Black (Greenwood, Ark.) extended his hitting streak to 25 games by going 2 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Tech also had some success with the long ball. Junior shortstop Robbie Hohler (Searcy, Ark.) hit his first homerun of the season, a solo shot to right center, in the fourth inning which gave Tech a 4-1 lead. Junior designated hitter Josh Govan (Crossett, Ark.) belted his third homerun of the season, a solo shot to left field, in the top of the eighth inning.

Freshman pitcher Caleb Powers (Dover, Ark.) earned the victory for the Wonder Boys, as his record moved to 2-1 on the year. Powers earned the win in a relief effort as he tossed three innings, allowing three hits, no runs, walking none, and striking out two.

The Wonder Boys will be back in action Tues. March 25 when they step out of conference play and travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Drury. Tech and Drury will play one nine inning game with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 2 p.m.
