TWO WONDER BOYS NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-GSC WEST DIVISION BASEBALL SELECTIONS

        RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Two Arkansas Tech Wonder Boy Baseball players were named Second-Team All-Gulf South Conference West Division selections on Thursday in a release from the league office in Birmingham, Ala.

Junior leftfielder Jeremy Houchin (Springdale, Ark.) and junior rightfielder Clint Stroud (Bonham, Texas) were each named Second-Team All-GSC West Division honorees.

The All-GSC Teams are voted on by the league’s head coaches respective to their own divisions and the coaches aren’t allowed to vote for their own players.

In the West Division, Southern Arkansas had the most honorees with 10 players, including a league-best seven First-Team selections. Delta State and Henderson State each had seven players selected, while Ouachita Baptist had four, Harding had three, Tech and Arkansas-Monticello each had two selections and Christian Brothers had one player selected to one of the two All-GSC West Division teams.

          Meanwhile, in the East Division, West Alabama led the way with eight overall selections, including five first-team honorees, while Valdosta State and West Florida had six selections each. North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville each had five honorees, while Montevallo had one player selected.

          In addition to naming the All-GSC Teams in each division, the league also announced its individual honors as Ouachita Baptist junior outfielder Will Goudy was named the GSC West Division Player of the Year, while Ouachita Baptist first baseman Brock Green was named the West Division’s Freshman of the Year. Goudy becomes the third consecutive Tiger to be named the West Division’s Player of the Year. In the East Division, Valdosta State junior designated hitter Matt Costello was named the East Division Player of the Year and Montevallo outfielder Duston Daughtery was named the East Division’s Freshman of the Year.

          Stroud, who is a transfer from Tyler Junior College, earned Second-Team honor after being the only Wonder Boy to start in and play every game this season. He led the team with a .365 batting average, while hitting six home runs and driving in a team-high 44 runs. In addition, he lead Tech in hits with 72 and also also scored 35 runs and smacked out nine doubles this past season.

          Houchin earned Second-Team honors after batting .296 in 44 games for the Wonder Boys. He led the Wonder Boys with 14 home runs, which was tied for seventh in the GSC and the 14 homers was tied for the fourth-best mark in the school’s single-season history. In addition, Houchin was second on the team in RBIs with 37 and he also added 11 doubles and scored 28 runs on the season.
