LAUREN KARNITZ NAMED TECH'S FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns sophomore cross country runner Lauren Karnitz (DeSoto, Kan.) as this week's fourth Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the 2008-09 school year.

Karnitz earns this week's after finishing in 41st place at last weekend's Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. Karnitz, who was a Second-Team All-Gulf South Conference selection last season, ran a the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:56.2. That time was a season and career-best 5K time for Karnitz. Karnitz's finish helped the Golden Suns, who are ranked in the latest USTFCCCA D-II South Region Poll, to a ninth-place finish out of 34 teams at last weekend's MSSU Stampede.

As a freshman last season, Karnitz was Tech's top runner as she four Top 30 finishes, including three Top 15 finishes. In addition, she ran a time of 20:01 to finish 14th at the 2007 GSC Cross Country Championships and earned All-GSC honors, becoming just the 11th different Golden Sun runner to earn All-GSC accolades.

Karnitz and her Golden Sun teammates return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they compete at the UALR Invitational at Rebsaman Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark.
