COLE BARTHEL NAMED TECH'S MALE STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas –
Junior quarterback Cole Barthel (Decatur, Ala.) has been
named this week's Arkansas Tech Male Athlete of the Week.
Barthel, who is a member of the Wonder Boys
Football team, earns this week's honor after a
successful junior campaign last fall for the Wonder
Boys. Last fall, Barthel, who missed the final five
games after suffering a knee injury against North
Alabama, accounted for 1,078 yards of total offense last
season. On the season, Barthel, who spent four seasons
playing minor league baseball in the Atlanta Braves
organization, was 100-for-146 through the air for 937
yards and he threw nine touchdowns and two interceptions
and had a completion percentage of 68.5 percent. In
Tech's 52-34 win over West Georgia, Barthel was
26-for-49 passing for 310 yards and had a school-record
six touchdown passes.
He enters his final season with the Wonder Boys this
coming fall having accounted for 2,429 yards of total
offense and has passed for 2,227 yards (221-for-342). He
has thrown 26 career touchdown passes, which is 15 shy
of the school record of 41 held by former Wonder Boy
Jason Campbell (2004-05).
Barthel and his teammates are currently going through
spring football practice. The team will have its Green
and Gold Spring Game on Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. at
Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field and close out spring
practice with the annual Senior Bowl on Tuesday, April
29 at 7 p.m.
