TECH NAMES AMANDA GRAPPE AS ITS FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Arkansas Tech has named Golden Suns 6-foot junior forward Amanda Grappe (Benton, Ark.) as this week’s Female Athlete of the Week.

Grappe is coming off back-to-back double-double performances last week for the 12th-ranked Golden Suns. In Tech's 71-59 win last Thursday over Christian Brothers, Grappe scored 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while she scored 29 points and had 12 boards in Tech's 87-58 win last Saturday over Southern Arkansas. In that game against SAU, Grappe reached a milestone as she became the 21st Golden Sun player to join the 1,000-Point Club. On the season, Grappe, who has now scored 1,024 career points, has recorded a team-best eight double-doubles this season and has been named the GSC West Division Women's Basketball Player of the Week four times this year and six times in her career.

The following is a question and answer segment to help get to know this successful Tech student-athlete:

Why did you ultimately choose to come to Tech?
Amanda Grappe: I chose Tech because I knew they had a great tradition in women's basketball. They were also one of the schools that wanted me and my sister, Ashley. We wanted to play together in college.

Outside of athletics, what is your favorite thing about college life?
AG: My favorite thing is the freedom. It's fun being out on my own and being independent, instead of depending on my parents for everything.

What is like to play basketball with your sister, Ashley?
AG: I've really enjoyed playing basketball with my sister, Ashley. In high school at Bryant, we almost had a whole team with me, Ashley and Allison. We had a point guard, shooter and a post player. Now in college, it's just not me and Ashley. Sometimes we have a sister connection out there on the court and we know what the other is going to do. My sister sometimes gets mad at me because I mess up her assists by missing shots! I have one more year to play with her, so we want to make the most of it. Since we have played together for so long, she really knows how to find me out on the court. Sometimes she throws me the ball and I don't even know it's coming.

What is your favorite type of music/group?
AG: I like pretty much everything, but my favorite is probably country music. I really love Carrie Underwood.

What do you consider your hobby?
AG: Hanging out with my friends and family every time I have free time, which isn't all that much during the basketball season. Recently, I went fishing, which was really fun and relaxing. I would have to say that shopping is my favorite thing to do.

What sport other than basketball do you like to watch or would you like to play the most?
AG: I love watching college football and basketball. I would like to play softball because I've played it all my life.

Who is one person that has had the biggest impact on your life?
AG: My parents. I have to say both of them because they have been to every game my sister and I have ever played and they made sure we made it to basketball tournaments during the summers when we were growing up. They've always been so supportive.

What is your most memorable moment as a Tech athlete?
AG: I have three memorable moments - 1.) Beating Henderson State last season when they were No. 1 in the nation; 2.) Beating UCA my freshman year in Conway and 3.) Sitting in Doc Bryan watching the television to see what seed we were in the Division II Basketball Tournament.

What would you do on your dream vacation?
AG: I would like to go to Australia or Europe. I don't know what people do over there, but I would like to find out.

What is your major at Tech?
AG: Early Childhood Education.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
AG: I would love to teach somewhere around the River Valley area.

Do you have a pet?
AG: I have dog. It's name is Sophie.

What's been the most rewarding class you have had while being at Tech?
AG: I really enjoyed Algebra with Mrs. Sherrill my freshman year. I learned a lot and she really cared about her students. I still talk to her today.

What are your goals for this season?
AG: I would like to see our team win the GSC Championship. I would really like to get to the finals of the NCAA Tournament before I graduate. And of course, win it!!

What will it be like to watch your sister Ashley play once you leave Tech next year?
AG: I'm not sure if I'll even be able to watch the games, because I'll want to be out there with her playing.
